Journey to Wanaka

:A Solo Adventure in New Zealand's South Island

The Famous Wanaka Tree PC: Isaac Fisher

It all started with a desire to explore the wild beauty of the South Island, and what better way to do that than with a good old-fashioned road trip? I set off from Hokitika in the early morning, ready to tackle the winding roads and epic scenery of the Haast Pass.

As I drove through dense rainforests and over crystal-clear rivers, I couldn't help but feel amazed by the natural beauty that surrounded me. The scenery was truly awe-inspiring, and I couldn't wait to see what else the South Island had in store for me.

After several hours of driving, I finally arrived in Wanaka, just in time for the sunset. I had heard so much about the famous Wanaka tree, and I couldn't wait to see it in person. I quickly made my way to the tree, and oh my goodness, it did not disappoint!

The Wanaka tree is a lone willow tree that stands in the middle of Lake Wanaka, and it has become an iconic symbol of the town. It's said to have been planted by a local farmer over 80 years ago, and it has since become one of the most photographed trees in the world. And I can see why - the sunset behind the tree was absolutely stunning!

As I basked in the peacefulness of the moment, I did have one tiny issue - the sandflies! These little pests were everywhere, and they seemed to be enjoying the sunset just as much as I was. But even with the sandflies, I still couldn't help but feel completely at peace and grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty.

After taking in the beauty of the Wanaka tree, I decided to explore the town's nightlife. Wanaka is known for its fun bars and restaurants, and I was not disappointed. I ended up at a bar called The Bullock Bar, where I enjoyed some delicious pub food and a few drinks. The atmosphere was lively and fun, and I ended up chatting with some locals who gave me great tips on what to see in the area.

The next morning, I woke up early and hit the shops. Wanaka has a multitude of shopping opportunities, from local boutiques to well-known brands. I loved browsing through the shops and picking up some souvenirs to take home with me.

Wanaka is a great 3/4 way point between Queenstown and the lower South Island. It's a charming town with plenty to do, from exploring the natural beauty of the Wanaka tree to hitting up the fun bars and shops. And the drive over the Haast Pass is a journey you won't soon forget.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, hit the road, and get ready for an epic adventure through the stunning South Island of New Zealand. Just don't forget the bug spray!
